An instance is a single zone that is only accessible to players on a conditional basis, unlike most zones which can be entered at any time. They are characterized by allowing many several groups of players to enter separate "instances" of that zone at the same time. This is opposed to most BCNM battle areas in FFXI, which are designed non-instanced, and can only hold roughly 4 groups of players maximum at a time.
