Throughout Vana'diel, you'll find many different things. The most non-descript of these are targets known as ???. While typically a reference to a target actually CALLED ???, many people make broad references to any type of target a ???. Blank ???s are involved in numerous quests (most notably for the final cutscenes for each of the relic weapons).
Touching a ??? will almost always result in a cryptic message of some sort. If a quest did not bring you to one, you may find a hint in the message received. If you find that nothing is out of the ordinary, chances are, they probably aren't.
However, exercise caution with ???s you've never seen. You may inadvertently spawn an NM that will eat you before you realize what you've done. Typically, though, those are related to quests, but you may have forgotten about it. These Pop NMs can also be spawned, more often, by trading items to the ???s. Check the link out for a list of all known non-quest pop NMs across Vana'diel. That is, NMs that are not related to progression in a quest or mission, but instead may offer rewards, or on the rare occasion, nothing at all of significance.
Explore, Vana'diel is full of these targets, and you never know what you might find.
